If you know how and when you want to ride, where you are going to ride, how comfortable and safe you must be, and what you’d like to look like as you ride, you’ll have an easier time choosing your bike. Fashion really does get involved when you make a choice. We all like one color or style more than another. You’d be silly not to pay attention to these factors when getting your new bike. Obviously, the style and fashion elements of the bicycle should not be your top priority (unless the bicycle is just for show). Evaluating your choices according to safety and comfort will be the best first step. When you’ve assembled some bikes that are both comfortable and safe, then look to see which you like the looks of better. You shouldn't keep the bicycle seat at the lowest setting, either. You always want to bring the seat up at least a few inches when you begin to ride, so resource keep this in mind when you are picking your bike. The added space between you and the crossbar, afforded by raising the seat slightly, will make a positive impact on your level of comfort. The goal here is to create a height with your seat so that when your pedal is at its lowest position your leg should be almost (but not quite) fully extended.

How many gears will you use on a regular basis? If you plan to ride in rocky or mountainous areas, you’ll need more gears than riding on flat land. You can’t evaluate the bike only by the number of gears it has. You may never have cause to use all the gears. Why spend extra money paying for something that you don’t need? Know how you’ll ride your bike; make sure you have the correct gears for traveling, especially when this is your main mode of transport.

Your main priority is the physical fit of your bike. If you intend to use your bike a lot, perhaps as your main method of transport, it is important you keep this in mind. Comfort and saftey are the two most important aspects of riding a bike.
